Joaquín Torres García was born in Montevideo , the capital of Uruguay , on July 28, 1874. He is considered the founder of Constructive Universalism. His parents were Joaquín Torres García and María Pérez Fradera. Joaquin acquired his art knowledge and skills by spening many hours cutting and assembling wooden carpentry pieces when he was young. In 1890 Torres García decided to emigrate in order to become a painter, a job he believed could not be accomplished in Montevideo. He travelled with his family to Europe when he was seventeen. While in Spain, Torres García attended a local academy learning basic skills during the day and took drawing classes at a night school. His family decided to live in Barcelona in 1892 so that Torres García could enroll in the Escuela de Bellas Artes (School of Fine Arts) (Wikipedia).

In 1920, Torres García went to Paris with his family, never again to return to Spain. From Paris Torres García went to New York City where he furthered his social connections. Eventually he returned to Europe, Italy, because he was suffering financially. There he began manufacturing toys yet again. He founded the Aladdin Toy Company. He again moved to Paris in 1926 with his family. He left six years later and moved to Madrid. There he established the Grupo Constuctivo in 1933. Finally, in 1934, Torres García returned to Montevideo. There he was christened a member of the European artistic elite. He established the Sociedad de las Artes del Uruguay in order to integrate all arts and acting. He also gave classes on art history at the Escuelas Taller de Artes Plásticas. He was named honorary professor of the
